Changes in the Color of Acrylic Heat Polymerization after Soaked in Jatropha Leaf Extract (Jatropha Curcas L.) 40% for 1, 5, 10 Days

Introduction

Heat polymerization acrylic resin is a widely used material in dentistry for making denture bases. However, the color stability of this material is crucial as it can indicate damage to the denture. One of the factors that affect changes in color is the ability of resin to absorb liquids and substances contained in them. This study aims to analyze changes in the color of acrylic resins of heat polymerization after being soaked in jatropha leaf extract (Jatropha curcas L.) with a concentration of 40% for 1, 5, and 10 days.

Materials and Methods

The sample used in this study consisted of acrylic resin plates in the form of beams with dimensions of 40 mm long, 10 mm wide, and 2 mm thickness. There are 24 samples divided into four groups: Control Group (I), 1 Day Soaking Group (II), 5 Days Soaking Group (III), and 10-day Soaking Group (IV), each consisting of 6 samples. The process of making acrylic resins is done by mixing polymers and monomers in a ratio of 3: 1, then dried at 74 ° C for 2 hours and continued with a temperature of 100 ° C for 1 hour in the waterbath. After that, the sample is tidied up and soaked in a 40% jatropha leaf extract before measurement.

Measurement of Color Changes

Measurement of color changes is done using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer from Thermo Fisher Scientific. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Post HOC LSD test. The average results and standard deviations of the absorbance value indicate that the control group (I) has an absorbance of 0.055 ± 0.014, the soaking group of 1 day (II) 0.111 ± 0.031, the immersion group 5 days (III) 0.187 ± 0.057, and the immersion group 10 days (IV) 0.269 ± 0.090. The ANOVA test shows the value of P = 0,000 (p <0.05), which indicates a significant difference in color changes between the groups being tested.

Results and Discussion

Further analysis with the Post Hoc LSD test shows that there is no significant difference between the control group and the 1-day immersion group (p = 0.103). Conversely, comparisons with a 5-day and 10-day immersion group showed a significant difference. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant color change in the acrylic resin of heat polymerization after being soaked in a 40% jatropha leaf extract. Color changes increase with the length of immersion time, which shows that the longer acrylic resin is soaked, the greater the color changes that occur.
