Introduction

The development of superrabsorbent polymers (SAPs) has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in various industries, including hygienic and agricultural products. SAPs are capable of absorbing large amounts of water, making them ideal for use in products that require high absorption capabilities. In this study, we discuss the manufacture and characterization of superrabsorbent polymers based on cellulose carboxymethyl (CMC) and cellulose hydroxiethyl (HEC), with a cross-binding agent divinil sulfone.

Materials and Methods

The materials used in this study include CMC, HEC, divinil sulfone, and potassium hydroxide (KOH). The CMC and HEC were mixed in a certain mass ratio, and then heated at 90°C. Divinil sulfone was added as a cross-binding agent, followed by the addition of 1 M KOH and left for 6 hours. The mixture was then immersed in distilled water, and the resulting gel was dried with acetona. The film formed was then mashed and characterized through water absorption testing, the degree of cross-binding, and the analysis of FTIR, DSC, and TGA.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the optimal water absorption value was found in SAP with the CMC: HEC 7:1 ratio and a concentration of 4%, reaching 2760% with a cross-binding percentage of 72.50%. Through the FTIR spectrum testing, it was proven that the formation of the Superrabsorbent polymer on the SAP with the CMC: HEC 7:1 and 4% concentration ratio marked by the existence of groups -OH at a wavelength of 3220.4 cm⁻¹ and the group -coo at a wavelength of 1416.3 cm⁻¹.

In addition, thermal analysis using DSC shows that the Glas transition temperature (TG) SAP is between TG CMC and HEC, which is 126.71°C, while TG CMC is 148.56°C and TG HEC 151.68°C. This indicates that there has been a good mixing between the two samples. In the TGA analysis, the CMC sample left a residue of 34.7% from the initial mass with a mass loss of 65.2%, while the optimal SAP sample showed a mass loss of 69.35% and left 30.65% residue from the initial mass.

Discussion

The making of CMC and HEC-based superrabsorbent polymers shows a significant potential in applications that require high absorption capabilities, such as hygienic and agricultural products. CMC and HEC are biopolymers that are relatively environmentally friendly and can be obtained from renewable sources. The existence of cross-binding agents such as divinil sulfon is very important to increase the stability and capability of the polymer absorption.

The characterization process carried out, such as FTIR testing, allows researchers to confirm the chemical structure formed, while DSC and TGA analysis provides information about the thermal properties of the resulting polymer. This is important in determining the range of superrabsorbent polymer applications, especially in varied temperature conditions.

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the CMC and HEC ratio and the concentration of cross-binding agents play an important role in determining the nature and performance of the Superrabsorbent polymer. The success of this research can open up opportunities for more efficient and sustainable product development in the industrial sector that requires materials with high absorption capabilities.
