The Influence of Liquidity and Profitability on the Capital Adequacy Ratio in the Open Banking Sector in Indonesia

Introduction

The banking industry in Indonesia has undergone significant development in recent years, with the success of a bank no longer solely measured by profits. The health and stability of a bank have become equally important indicators of its success. One crucial measure of a bank's health and stability is the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), which reflects the bank's ability to bear risk. In this study, we examine the effect of liquidity (Loan to Deposit Ratio - LDR) and profitability (Return on Assets - ROA, Return on Equity - ROE) on CAR in the open banking sector in Indonesia.

Background

The open banking sector in Indonesia has experienced rapid growth, with the number of banks increasing significantly in recent years. This growth has led to increased competition among banks, making it essential for them to maintain a healthy and stable financial position. The CAR is a critical indicator of a bank's ability to absorb potential losses and maintain its financial stability. Methodology

This study uses multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between LDR, ROA, ROE, and CAR in the open banking sector in Indonesia. The analysis was conducted using the SPSS 15 for Windows program. The study uses a sample of 20 banks in the open banking sector in Indonesia, with data collected from 2015 to 2020.

Results

The results of the multiple linear regression analysis show that LDR, ROA, and ROE together have a positive and significant influence on CAR in the open banking sector in Indonesia. The F-count value of 282,658 is greater than the F-table value (2.69) at a significance level of 5%. This indicates that the model is statistically significant and that the independent variables (LDR, ROA, and ROE) have a significant influence on the dependent variable (CAR).

Deeper Analysis

A deeper analysis of the results shows that LDR has the most dominant effect on CAR. This means that changes in LDR have a direct and significant impact on CAR, greater than the influence of ROA and ROE. This finding suggests that liquidity plays a key role in maintaining banking health and stability. The higher the loan ratio to savings (LDR), the greater the risk borne by the bank. Therefore, banks need to maintain a balance between credit and liquidity management to achieve optimal CAR.
