Introduction

Cherry tomatoes, scientifically known as Lycopersicon Esculentum Miller, are one of the most sought-after agricultural commodities, particularly in lowland areas. This study aims to determine the exact concentration of nutrients in increasing the growth and production of cherry tomatoes through a hydroponic system.

The study was conducted at the Sumatran Royal Housing Screenhouse, Medan Tuntung, at an altitude of approximately 32 meters above sea level, from March to August 2017. A complete random design was employed, with one treatment factor, namely the nutritional concentration set at three levels: 1300 PPM, 1750 ppm, and 2200 ppm. The experiment aimed to investigate the impact of each nutritional concentration on plant growth and production.

Results

The results showed that the nutritional concentration of 1750 ppm had a positive effect on the growth of plant stem diameter. Meanwhile, the concentration of 2200 ppm nutrients has proven effective in increasing several important parameters, including plant height, flowering speed, number of branches, number of segments, fruit weight, and number of fruits produced. This finding indicates that the selection of proper nutritional concentrations is very important to achieve optimal results in cherry tomato cultivation with a hydroponic system.
