In this context, this research aims to compare the performance of arrester modeling using three different models, namely IEEE, Micaela, and Karbalaye, with simulation using Transient Program Analysis Software (ATP).

In this context, the selection of the arrester model is crucial in determining the performance of the transmission system in dealing with disturbances from lightning strikes.

Methodology

The simulation is carried out in three different conditions:

Normal Conditions: The simulation is carried out under normal conditions to establish a baseline for comparison.
Lightning Strike Regarding Phase Wire: The simulation is carried out during a lightning strike regarding the phase wire before and after the installation of the arrester.
Lightning Strike Regarding Ground Wire: The simulation is carried out during a lightning strike regarding the ground wire before and after the installation of the arrester.

The simulation results are compared using the standard CIGRE current wave standard 10 Ka and the Surja Current IEC Standard 10 Ka.

Results

The simulation results show that the most effective arrester modeling to overcome direct strikes is the IEEE model, which results in the smallest percentage of errors on the standard CIGRE current wave standard 10 Ka. In phase A, the percentage of error is recorded at 10,945%, while for phases B and C each is 0.262% and -0.047% respectively.

On the other hand, for indirect strikes, the Karbalaye model shows the best performance with the smallest percentage of errors on the Surja Current IEC Standard 10 Ka, which is 7.99% in phases A, 0.011% in phase B, and -0.003% in the C phase.

Discussion

A more in-depth analysis shows that the selection of the arrester model is very influential on the performance of the transmission system in dealing with disturbances from lightning strikes. The IEEE model, which is proven to be more effective in direct strikes, may have a more adaptive design to the rapid and large voltage surge, while the Karbalaye model is superior in indirect strike conditions.

The success of each model in this simulation provides important information for the electricity system planner in choosing the right arrester to protect the transformer and other equipment from a dangerous voltage surge.

From this result, it can be concluded that the most appropriate arrester modeling to protect the transformer from more voltage caused by direct or indirect strikes is the IEEE model. This discovery emphasizes the importance of the use of technology and simulation in designing a safer and more reliable electrical system, as well as providing valuable insights for engineers in the field of electricity to continue to develop effective protection methods for electrical disorders.
