Leadership Relationship to the Work Motivation of the Implementing Nurse in the Inpatient Unit at the Herna General Hospital of Tebing Tinggi City in 2018
Introduction
In the healthcare industry, leadership plays a vital role in motivating and directing the performance of healthcare workers. The Herna General Hospital in Tebing Tinggi City is no exception, where the lack of work motivation among nurses is allegedly caused by leadership that is not optimal. This study aims to investigate the relationship between leadership and work motivation of nurses in inpatient units at the Herna General Hospital. The study employed a survey method with the Explanatory Research approach to express the relationship between leadership and work motivation of nurses.
Background of the Study
Leadership is a crucial element in any organization, and its impact on employee motivation cannot be overstated. Effective leadership can motivate employees to perform at their best, while poor leadership can lead to demotivation and decreased productivity. In the healthcare industry, leadership is particularly important, as it can impact the quality of care provided to patients. Methodology
This study used a survey method to collect data from nurses in the inpatient units at the Herna General Hospital. The survey was conducted from February to May 2018, and a total of 34 nurses participated in the study. The data was analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test to determine the relationship between leadership and work motivation.
Results
The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the role of leadership and work motivation, with a value of P = 0.042. Further details revealed that the decision making aspects (p = 0.029), direction and guidance (p = 0.035), and the awarding (p = 0.019) had a significant effect on work motivation. However, aspects of supervision (p = 0.057) and motivation (p = 0.115) did not show a significant effect on work motivation.
Discussion
The results of this study suggest that leadership plays an important role in increasing the work motivation of nurses, especially in the aspect of decision making, direction, guidance, and appreciation. This is consistent with previous studies that have shown that effective leadership can motivate employees to perform at their best. The study also highlights the need for attention to aspects of supervision and motivation, although statistically, they did not have a significant effect.
Conclusion
This study concludes that the leadership of the head of the Puskesmas plays an important role in increasing the work motivation of nurses. The study suggests that leaders in health organizations need to understand and implement the right strategies to increase the work motivation of their staff. Giving awards, for example, not only functions as an incentive but also creates a positive work environment and increases the confidence of nurses.
