The Effectiveness of Websites and Librarian Performance in Increasing Public Interest in Using the Medan City Library

Introduction

In today's digital age, libraries are no longer just repositories of books and other materials, but also vibrant community hubs that offer a wide range of services and resources to their patrons. The Medan City Library, located in the heart of Medan, Indonesia, is one such institution that aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for its users. However, despite its best efforts, the library has struggled to attract and retain a large and diverse user base. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the library's website and the performance of its librarians in increasing public interest in using the Medan City Library.

Background

The Medan City Library is a public library that serves the city's residents, providing access to a vast collection of books, journals, and other materials, as well as a range of programs and services. However, despite its rich resources and offerings, the library has faced challenges in attracting and retaining users. One of the key factors that may contribute to this issue is the effectiveness of the library's website and the performance of its librarians.

Theoretical Framework

This study draws on several theoretical frameworks to understand the relationship between the library website and librarian performance and public interest in using the Medan City Library. The first framework is the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) theory, which posits that the use of technology can facilitate access to information and services, leading to increased user engagement and participation. The second framework is the Use and Gratification theory, which suggests that users are motivated to use the library because they seek to satisfy their informational, social, and recreational needs. Finally, the AIDDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Decision, and Action) communication theory is used to understand the process of how users become interested in using the library.

Methodology

This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The study population consisted of registered library members who were active from January 2013 to March 2016, with a total of 7,308 people. The sample was taken using the Slovin formula, producing 377 respondents through the ActionDental sampling technique. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews.

Results

The results of this study show that the influence of the library website on public interest is relatively low, with a value of 0.369 units. Conversely, librarian performance has a moderate influence, reaching 0.464 units. This suggests that librarian performance makes a more significant contribution to the interest of the public to use the library compared to the library website.

Discussion

The findings of this study have several implications for the Medan City Library and other libraries in similar contexts. Firstly, the results suggest that the library website is not an effective tool for attracting and retaining users. This may be due to a lack of community understanding of the functions and benefits of the website, unclear navigation, or uninteresting content. To address this issue, the library may consider improving the appearance and navigation of its website, as well as presenting more interesting content for young audiences.

Secondly, the study highlights the importance of librarian performance in creating a positive user experience. Librarians who are knowledgeable and responsive to user needs can create better experiences, guide visitors in finding information, and utilize library services more effectively. With good communication skills, librarians can attract people to come back.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, several recommendations are made to improve the effectiveness of the library website and librarian performance in increasing public interest in using the Medan City Library. These recommendations include:

Website improvement: Improve the appearance and navigation of library websites to be more intuitive, as well as presenting more interesting content for young audiences.
Training for librarians: Conduct regular training for librarians so that they are more competent in providing the latest services and information to visitors.
User survey: Conducting periodic surveys of visitors to understand their needs and expectations of library services.

The findings suggest that librarian performance makes a more significant contribution to the interest of the public to use the library compared to the library website.
