Introduction to Speed Bumps

Speed bumps, also known as speed barriers, are an essential part of road design aimed at slowing down vehicle speeds. These barriers are typically made of additional asphalt or cement, placed across the road to reduce the speed of oncoming vehicles. In this study, we analyzed a speed bump design with a solid structure made of foam concrete, reinforced with oil palm empty bunch waste fibers. The dimensions of this speed bump are 400 mm long, 200 mm wide, and 150 mm high.

Analysis Methodology

The analysis was carried out using APDL 14.5 software, with a static simulation that tested the maximum pressure of 80,000 MPa. The results of the simulation showed that the maximum voltage received by the speed bump is 8.01 MPa. In addition, the compressive test results showed that the compressive strength of the Foam Concrete material (type A5) is 2.1 MPa, while the tensile force measured using the Brazilian test is 0.18 MPa. From this comparison, it can be concluded that the Speed Bump structure is not safe for use with the maximum load that can be received by vehicles, especially for the category of truck vehicles included in the group IIIC class.

The use of a mixture of Foam Concrete as the basic ingredient of speed bump has several advantages, including its heavy and ability to absorb energy. With a lighter weight than conventional concrete, Foam Concrete allows easier construction and saving transportation costs. However, the main weakness lies in the compressive strength and lower tensile than conventional material.

In this study, the importance of using fiber from oil palm empty bunches as an amplifier shows innovation in the utilization of environmentally friendly recycled materials. Utilization of agricultural waste not only helps reduce waste, but also increases the endurance of the material used in making speed bumps.

Limitations of Foam Concrete and Future Development

From the results of the analysis using Ansys, it appears that although the speed bump designed has the right dimensions, the material strength is still inadequate to withstand the maximum load of large vehicles. In other words, although geometrically the design is appropriate, the material factor becomes crucial in determining the safety of its use in the field. Therefore, it is essential for engineers and designers to consider both geometric design and material properties simultaneously so that the resulting speed bump can function effectively and safely.

By understanding the limits and advantages of Foam Concrete and the impact of recycling fiber use, further development can be directed at the search for alternative materials or modification of mixed compositions that can increase the strength and durability of speed bumps, so it is more suitable for use on roads that serve heavy vehicles.
