Introduction

The population of Indonesia has been increasing rapidly, driven by high fertility or birth rates. This phenomenon is influenced by the rational choices of individuals in society, which are shaped by cultural values and environmental conditions. The traditional Pameo "Many children with many fortune" seems to be shifting to "many children have a lot of burden." This perspective shift is caused by an increase in the level of community education, which triggers a deeper understanding of the meaning of the family, especially those related to children. In an increasingly materialistic era, demands for education and work have also experienced significant changes, where women now not only work in the informal sector, but also began to be involved in the formal sector.

Background of the Study

The two types of work that are often chosen by women are civil servants (PNS) and farmers. Each of these work sectors reflects different educational backgrounds. The existence of a hypothesis that links economic independence and education with women's decisions to delay marriage has implications for the number of children they have. This study seeks to reveal the relationship between women's work and the number of children through an explanative approach with quantitative methods. Researchers used 30 respondents, with 15 women working as civil servants and 15 women as farmers. The sampling method used is judgment sample, with data collected through the distribution of questionnaires and documents.

Methodology

The analysis results show sex preference between respondents. A total of 24 respondents (80%) argued that men and women were the same, while 6 respondents (20%) were opposite. This preference is more dominant in farmers' groups, where 5 people (33.3%) expressed these views, compared to civil servant respondents who were only 1 person (6.7%). In addition, there are significant differences in the number of children between these two groups. Farmer women tend to have more children than women civil servants, with the calculation of the smallest U value indicating the results of U = 60.6, compared to the table value of U at a significance of 0.05 which is 64.

Data Analysis

Further analysis through the calculation of Q XY Tied T shows the results of -1, while Zero Order shows the number 0.76. This shows that the independent variable (work) has a significant effect on the dependent variable (the number of children) with the mediarator of the marriage age variable. The relationship between these variables is very strong, shows that work has a real impact on women's decisions about the number of children they have.

Discussion

From this study, it can be concluded that women's work not only functions as a source of income, but also has implications for family planning and the number of children they have. Women who work as civil servants tend to prefer to have children in less amounts than women farmers. Increasing awareness about family planning and women's involvement in the world of work will continue to be a significant factor in determining the pattern of fertility in Indonesia.
