Relationship between Personal Hygiene, Individual Characteristics with Complaints of Skin Disorders in Elementary Age Children's Scavengers in Marelan TPA TPA 2019

Introduction

Scavengers, especially children, are often exposed to high health risks due to their work conditions that are full of dirt and garbage. One of the diseases they are vulnerable to is skin disorders. This study aims to understand the relationship between personal hygiene and individual characteristics with complaints of skin disorders in scavengers of elementary school age in the Final Disposal Site (TPA) plunged, Medan Marelan.

Methodology

This study uses an analytic survey method with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 43 children's scavengers became research subjects with total sampling techniques. Data analysis using the Chi-Square test, both univariate and bivariate.

Univariate Analysis

The results of the univariate analysis showed that 67.4% (29 people) of the child scavengers had complaints of skin disorders. Of these, 58.1% (25 people) are in the age range of 9-12 years. Furthermore, 62.8% (27 people) experienced complaints of skin disorders after working for more than 3 hours, and 67.4% (29 people) experienced complaints of skin disorders after working for more than 3 years.

Bivariate Analysis

Bivariate analysis reveals a significant relationship between complaints of skin disorders and skin hygiene (p-value 0.011), cleanliness of the hand, legs and nails (p-value 0.021), and cleanliness of clothing (p-value 0.038). However, no significant relationship was found between complaints of skin disorders and age (p-value 0.158), working hours (p-value 0.060), and working period (P-value 0.076).

Discussion

These results indicate that personal hygiene has a major influence on the emergence of complaints of skin disorders in children's scavengers. Increasing awareness and habits of maintaining personal hygiene, such as washing hands with soap before and after eating, using clean water and flowing, avoiding the use of towels with family, and drying clothes in the sun, is an important step in reducing the risk of skin disorders.

It is essential to remind that the working conditions in an unhygienic landfill are the main factors causing skin disorders. Therefore, joint efforts are needed to increase sanitation and cleanliness in the landfill, as well as providing education and access to health facilities for scavengers, especially children. This effort will help improve the quality of life of scavengers, especially in preventing and overcoming the health problems they face.

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of personal hygiene in preventing skin disorders in children's scavengers. The results of this study suggest that increasing awareness and habits of maintaining personal hygiene can reduce the risk of skin disorders. Therefore, it is crucial to provide education and access to health facilities for scavengers, especially children, to improve their quality of life and prevent health problems.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase awareness and habits of maintaining personal hygiene: Scavengers, especially children, need to be educated on the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, such as washing hands with soap before and after eating, using clean water and flowing, avoiding the use of towels with family, and drying clothes in the sun.
Improve sanitation and cleanliness in the landfill: The working conditions in the landfill need to be improved to reduce the risk of skin disorders. This can be achieved by increasing sanitation and cleanliness in the landfill.
Provide education and access to health facilities: Scavengers, especially children, need to have access to education and health facilities to improve their quality of life and prevent health problems.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focuses on children's scavengers in the Final Disposal Site (TPA) plunged, Medan Marelan, which may not be representative of all scavengers in the region. Finally, the study only examines the relationship between personal hygiene and individual characteristics with complaints of skin disorders, and does not explore other potential factors that may contribute to skin disorders.
