Introduction

This thesis aims to examine the effect of the television ad "Ringgo, when to marry" on the purchasing behavior of La Lights cigarettes on USU Medan FISIP students.

The ad "Ringgo, when to marry" was chosen for this study because it was considered attractive and had its own characteristics. The iconic sentence in this ad has even become a popular slang among young people. The purpose of this study was to reveal the extent of the effect of the ad on student decisions to buy La Lights cigarettes.

Methodology

This study uses a correlational method with a sample of 93 undergraduate students in 2004-2006 at USU FISIP. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, which is the selection of samples based on certain characteristics. Data was collected through a questionnaire containing 24 questions about La Lights advertisements and smoking habits, then analyzed using a single table, cross table, and hypothesis test.

Data Analysis

The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the La Lights "Ringgo advertising show, when to marry" with the act of buying La Lights cigarettes by USU FISIP students. The hypothesis test using the Spearman rank produces the RS value = 0.302, shows a low relationship but surely between the two variables.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that cigarette advertisements do have an influence on purchasing behavior, even if not explicitly display products. This is important to understand because cigarette advertisements have great potential to form consumer perceptions and behavior, especially among young people. The findings of this study can be a reference for improving marketing strategies, as well as being taken into consideration for regulators in developing policies related to dangerous product advertisements.
