Introduction

The phenomenon of urbanization has experienced a significant surge since the 1970s, with a notable increase in the 1980s. Medan City, one of the major cities in Indonesia, has recorded a growth rate of urbanization that is 2 to 3 times the national average growth, which is 2.32 percent per year. The movement of the population from rural areas to cities often has an impact on the problem of poverty, where poverty conditions that occur in rural areas switch quickly to urban areas. The social problems caused by this shift not only worsen the situation of people's lives but also influence the overall development process.

The Role of the Informal Sector in Medan City

The informal sector in big cities such as Medan has become a savior for many individuals who are trapped in difficult economic conditions. This sector contributes a major contribution to the economic dynamics of the city and is a source of income for most residents who have low income. Thus, the informal sector has a crucial role in meeting the needs of the poor, which often cannot be reached by the formal sector. The informal sector not only functions as a job provider but also as a bridge between the needs of the community and existing resources.

Research Objectives and Methodology

This study aims to analyze the inequality of income distribution between the informal sector working households, as well as explaining the relationship between their poverty level and the time spent making a living. In addition, this research also wants to identify the factors that influence the allocation of time use for households in the informal sector. The location of the study was conducted in three villages located close to the traditional market, one of which was Bantan Village in Medan District.

The Challenges Faced by Informal Sector Workers

Workers in the informal sector are often in vulnerable conditions, without adequate social security and are often faced with various challenges, such as access to capital, training, and legal protection. Therefore, a deep understanding of the dynamics of this sector is very necessary to formulate policies that can improve the welfare of the city community, especially those involved in the informal sector.

Patterns of Expenditure and Income of Informal Sector Workers

By conducting research in areas close to traditional markets, we can dig deeper about the patterns of expenditure and income experienced by informal sector workers. This is very important to understand how they survive and adapt in the midst of uncertain economic conditions. The results of this study are expected to make a significant contribution to efforts to improve socioeconomic conditions in the city of Medan and become a reference in developing more effective empowerment programs for the urban poor.

The Importance of Understanding the Informal Sector

A deep understanding of the dynamics of the informal sector is very necessary to formulate policies that can improve the welfare of the city community, especially those involved in the informal sector. The results of this study are expected to make a significant contribution to efforts to improve socioeconomic conditions in the city of Medan and become a reference in developing more effective empowerment programs for the urban poor.
