Analysis of Behavior Use of Pesticides and Complaints of the Health of the Orange Garden Workers in Kuta Mbelin Village, Lau Baleng District in 2020

Introduction

The use of pesticides in agriculture has become a common practice in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. However, the improper use of pesticides can have severe consequences for human health and the environment. In Kuta Mbelin Village, Lau Baleng District, orange garden workers are often exposed to pesticides without proper knowledge and training. This study aims to analyze the behavior of the use of pesticides and health complaints among orange garden workers in Kuta Mbelin Village.

Background

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control pests and diseases that can damage crops. However, many pesticides are toxic and can cause harm to human health and the environment if not used properly. In Kuta Mbelin Village, plant sprayers often do not realize that the pesticides they use are actually poison. They tend to assume that pesticides are drugs for plants, so spraying practices are often done in a way that is not in accordance with established procedures.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive survey method with a population of all orange garden workers in Kuta Mbelin Village, totaling 63 people. A sample of 47 workers was taken through purposive sampling techniques. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire, then processed and presented in the form of frequency distribution tables.

Results

The results of this study showed that as many as 85.7% of sprayers had good knowledge about pesticides. However, even though their knowledge and attitudes are classified as good (85.7%), only 57.1% of those who can apply pesticides correctly. This indicates the gap between knowledge and practice carried out in the field.

All sprayer workers have experienced health complaints in the past month, with the most common complaints including dizziness (100%), watery eyes (91.4%), and chest tightness (80%). Some other complaints reported were nausea (88.6%), blurred views (82.9%), and coughing (48.6%). This data reflects a significant relationship between improper use of pesticides and health problems experienced by workers.

Discussion

The results of this study highlight the importance of proper education and training for orange garden workers on the use of pesticides. The Health Office and the Department of Agriculture should work together with farmer groups and health workers to provide better education regarding the use of safe pesticides. Routine counseling about the dangers of pesticides for the health of the body and the environment, as well as the importance of conducting regular health checks, it needs to be held to reduce the health risks faced by orange garden workers.

Conclusion

Workers' health is a key factor in agricultural success, and a better understanding of pesticides can help create a safer and healthier work environment. The results of this study emphasize the need for a better approach to pesticide use, including education, training, and regular health checks. By improving the behavior of pesticide use, we can reduce the health risks faced by orange garden workers and maintain environmental sustainability.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improved education and training: The Health Office and the Department of Agriculture should work together with farmer groups and health workers to provide better education regarding the use of safe pesticides.
Regular health checks: Routine counseling about the dangers of pesticides for the health of the body and the environment, as well as the importance of conducting regular health checks, it needs to be held to reduce the health risks faced by orange garden workers.
Improved pesticide use practices: The use of pesticides should be done in accordance with established procedures, and workers should be trained on the proper use of pesticides.
Monitoring and evaluation: The Health Office and the Department of Agriculture should monitor and evaluate the use of pesticides and the health of orange garden workers to identify areas for improvement.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The sample size of 47 workers may not be representative of the entire population of orange garden workers in Kuta Mbelin Village.
Self-reported data: The data collected through interviews may be subject to bias and may not accurately reflect the actual behavior of pesticide use and health complaints.
Limited scope: This study only focused on orange garden workers in Kuta Mbelin Village and may not be generalizable to other agricultural settings.
