The city of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province, is a key gateway to the region and has immense tourism potential. However, despite its advantages, the number of foreign tourist visits to Medan City has not reached the expected target in the past three years. This study aims to investigate the reasons behind the suboptimal foreign tourist visits to Medan City.

Background

Medan City is a metropolitan city with a rich history and cultural diversity, making it an attractive destination for tourists. The city has a lot to offer, from its historical landmarks to its vibrant cultural festivals. However, despite its potential, the city has not been able to attract the desired number of foreign tourists. The Medan City Culture and Tourism Office (Disbudpar) has the responsibility of marketing tourism and improving the welfare of the local community. To achieve this goal, Disbudpar applies various marketing policies that are in line with their vision of making Medan City a superior tourist destination.

Methodology

This study employed a survey method to collect data through questionnaires. The questionnaire was designed based on relevant marketing mix variables, and the data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The target population was all foreign tourists visiting Medan City during the study period. A sampling method by chance was used, and as many as 95 tourists were successfully taken as samples.

Results

The results of the analysis show that the implementation of the marketing mix policy has not been carried out optimally. As a result, the target of tourist visits cannot be achieved. The study revealed that the marketing mix policy that had been implemented was not fully effective. Therefore, it is recommended to make improvements to each of the marketing mix variables in order to increase foreign tourist visits to the city of Medan.

This study has some limitations that need to be acknowledged. The study only focused on foreign tourists visiting Medan City, and the sample size was relatively small. Additionally, the study only analyzed the marketing mix policy and did not consider other factors that may influence tourist visits.
