Introduction

The diversity of insect species in agricultural ecosystems is a crucial aspect of understanding the complex relationships between plants, insects, and the environment. Insect diversity plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, pollination, and natural pest control. The salak plant (Salacca Zalacca Gaert.) is a popular fruit crop in Indonesia, and its cultivation has been increasing in recent years. However, the impact of environmental factors on insect diversity in salak planting land remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the diversity of insect species in salak planting land at two different heights, namely 350 meters above sea level (mdpl) and 1200 mdpl.

Research Methodology

The research method used in this study is a survey, which involves collecting data through observations and sampling. The observations were made six times in each location, using various tools such as falling traps, light traps, yellow traps, and insect taking directly by hand. The sampling process was conducted at the Plant Pest and Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. The data collected were then analyzed to determine the diversity index (H') and the frequent index (E) of insects in both locations.

Results and Analysis

The results of this study indicate that in salak cropping land at an altitude of 350 mdpl, there are 10 orders and 20 families with a total of 663 individual insects. Meanwhile, on salak planting land at an altitude of 1200 mdpl, found 8 orders and 19 families with a total population of 367 individuals. The diversity index (H') on salak planting land at an altitude of 350 mdpl is 2.03, while at an altitude of 1200 mdpl is 2.35. This value shows that the diversity of insects in both locations is classified as moderate. In addition, the frequent index (E) of insects in both places is also classified as high, with the value of E <1. This indicates that there is a high diversity in the two salak planting land.

Conclusion

From this study, it can be concluded that the height of the place affects the diversity of insects in the salak planting land. Lower height (350 mdpl) has a diversity of insects that are more than a higher height (1200 mdpl), although the diversity index at an altitude of 1200 mdpl still shows a pretty good value. This study provides an important insight into the agricultural ecosystem, especially in understanding how environmental factors can affect biodiversity, which in turn can have an impact on land health and land productivity.
