Introduction

Sleep is a fundamental human need that plays a crucial role in maintaining physical and mental health. However, for patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), sleep quality is often disrupted by various physical and environmental conditions. This study aims to identify sleep patterns and sleep disorders experienced by DM patients at Medan Johor Health Center. Understanding the sleep patterns and disorders of DM patients is essential to develop effective interventions that can improve their sleep quality and overall quality of life.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research design with a purposive sampling method, involving 96 respondents. The questionnaires used included demographic data, sleep patterns, and sleep disorders. The data collected were analyzed to identify the sleep patterns and disorders experienced by DM patients at Medan Johor Health Center.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of respondents had a very short duration of sleep, with 38% of them only sleeping between 30-60 minutes. This is a serious problem that needs attention, as it can have a negative impact on the health and well-being of DM patients. Furthermore, the frequency of nocturia (waking up to urinate) more than five times a night was reported by 43% of respondents, indicating a potential sleep disorder that can affect the long-term health of DM patients.

Another striking aspect of the research results is the difficulty in starting to sleep. About 44% of respondents claimed to be difficult to sleep, which increased stress levels and dissatisfaction with their sleep quality. In this case, 45% of respondents were dissatisfied with the sleep they got, and 41% admitted that they still felt sleepy in the morning, which of course affected their productivity during the day. In fact, 43% of respondents claimed to be very sleepy throughout the day, adding to the negative impact on their quality of life.

Physical Factors Contributing to Sleep Disorders

Research revealed that physical factors such as the desire to urinate at night are the main causes of sleep disorders, with 99% of respondents experiencing this problem. In addition, 85% of respondents reported feeling pain, while the other 81% experienced tingling and cramps in the legs while sleeping. These physical problems can contribute greatly to the difficulty of sleep experienced by diabetes patients.

Environmental Factors Disrupting Sleep Patterns

From an environmental perspective, research shows that external factors also play a role in disrupting DM patients' sleep patterns. As many as 91% of respondents felt the room temperature that was too hot, 76% experienced mosquito bites, and 71% felt disturbed by noise in the house. All of these factors can create an uncomfortable sleep environment and contribute to poor sleep quality.

Seeing the results of this study, it is essential for medical personnel and the community to better understand and find solutions to sleep problems in patients with diabetes mellitus. Conducting appropriate interventions to improve sleep quality can help patients in managing their diabetes conditions and improving overall quality of life. The educational and improvement program of the sleep environment may be the first step that needs to be considered to help patients with diabetes mellitus at Medan Johor Health Center and other places.
