Introduction

Drinking water in packaging (AMDK) Galon is a popular choice for many people in big cities due to its convenience and perceived hygiene. However, despite its safety, Galon AMDK still has the potential to be contaminated by pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli). This study aims to determine the existence of E. coli bacteria in Galon AMDK and identify the factors that affect its presence, including the condition of Gallon AMDK, dispenser conditions, and consumer behavior in using Gallon AMDK.

Research Purposes

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the existence of E. coli bacteria in Galon AMDK. Additionally, this study aims to identify the factors that contribute to the presence of these bacteria, including the condition of Gallon AMDK, dispenser conditions, and consumer behavior in using Gallon AMDK. By understanding these factors, we can develop strategies to minimize the risk of contamination and ensure the quality of Gallon AMDK consumed.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive survey research design. A total of 30 Gallons of AMDK were taken from Medan using a non-probability sampling method, specifically convenience sampling techniques. Laboratory results showed that 15 of the 30 samples (50%) contained E. coli bacteria.

Dispenser Age: Samples in dispensers more than 3 days old indicated a high level of contamination, with 10 of 12 samples (83.3%) containing E. coli.
Dispenser Condition: The sample purchased at the stall showed 10 of 11 samples (90.9%) contaminated with E. coli.
Dispenser Age and Condition: Dispensers more than 5 years old contained E. coli in 11 of 17 samples (64.7%).

Consumer Behavior

Cleaning Habits: Dispensers that were only cleaned outside indicated 12 of 21 samples (57.1%) contaminated.
Cleaning Frequency: The last dispenser was cleaned more than 6 weeks ago had E. coli contamination at 15 of 20 samples (75.0%).
Cleaning Method: Dispenser which is only wiped shows 12 of 21 samples (57.1%) contaminated.
Use of Cleaning Materials: Use of lap (napkin) to clean the dispenser contribute to contamination, with 10 of 15 samples (66.7%).
Residual Water Reservoir: The residual water reservoir that is cleaned every time is full indicates 6 of the 8 samples (75%) contaminated.
Draining Remaining Water: Samples that do not drain the remaining water when replacing the new gallon have 11 of 13 samples (84.6%) contaminated.
Gallon Cap Cleaning: The sample where the gallon cap is not wiped with alcohol tissue when replacing the new gallon shows 4 of 4 samples (100%) contaminated.

The results of this study indicate that the existence of E. coli bacteria in Galon AMDK is influenced by several factors, including gallon conditions, dispenser age, and consumer behavior in maintaining the cleanliness of the dispenser. To maintain the quality of Gallon AMDK consumed, it is recommended that consumers:

Clean the dispenser regularly, ideally less than 6 weeks.
Avoid using unclean cloth or used repeatedly.
Always drain the remaining water before replacing the new gallon and cleaning the gallon cap with alcohol tissue.

By taking these precautions, the risk of gallon AMDK contamination by pathogenic bacteria can be minimized, ensuring public health is maintained.
