Adaptation Test of Several New Hybrid Corn Strains (Zea Mays L.) in Langkat Regency

Introduction

Corn (Zea Mays L.) is one of the most important agricultural commodities in Indonesia, and its adaptation to local environmental conditions plays a crucial role in determining agricultural productivity. In the context of Langkat Regency, the selection of suitable corn strains can help increase food security and agricultural productivity. This study aimed to assess the adaptability of different hybrid corn varieties in local conditions by conducting an adaptation test in Binjai District, Langkat Regency.

Methodology

The study applied a random block design not factorial with eight treatments and three replications. The varieties studied consisted of Bio 9900, Bio 9698, Bio 9999, BC 1263, BISI 2, P-13, and C-7 as control. The analysis used in this study is a variant analysis (ANOVA) to evaluate the difference between treatments. Observed parameters include plant height (cm), number of flowering days, cob weight per sample (g), yield per plot (kg), results per sample (g), and weighing 100 seeds (g).

Results

The results showed that there was a significant effect of the corn strain on the number of flowering days and plant height, while there was no significant effect on the weight of the cob per sample, the results per plot, and the results per sample. From the results of the study, the BC 1263 strain shows better results compared to other strains. Thus, this variety can be recommended for further development in the region.

By understanding and utilizing the appropriate strains, it is expected that corn production in this area can increase, support food security, and provide economic benefits for farmers.
