Introduction

The brown planthopper (nilaparvata lugens stall.) is a significant pest that affects rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) worldwide, causing substantial losses in agricultural productivity. The use of fertilizers is a common practice in agriculture to promote plant growth and increase crop yields. However, the type and dose of fertilizer used can have a significant impact on the level of brown planthopper attacks. This study aims to investigate the influence of the type and dose of fertilizer on the level of brown planthopper attacks in several varieties of rice plants.

Methodology

This study was conducted in Serdang Village, Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency, from March to June 2018. The method used was a random group design (RAK) with two factors and three replications. The first factor is fertilizer dose, which consists of four treatments: inorganic fertilizer, 50 kg/manure plot, 100 kg/manure plot, and 150 kg/manure plot. The second factor is variety, which consists of two treatments: Ciherang and Inpari 10.

Results

The results of this study showed that the dose of P2 fertilizer (100 kg/plot) gave the best results in increasing the weight of 1000 eggs, production per plot, and resistance to brown planthopper attacks. Meanwhile, V2 varieties (Inpari 10) show the best performance in increasing the number of puppies, the number of panicles, 1000 grains, and production per plot, and more resistant to brown planthopper attacks. The interaction between fertilizer doses and V2P2 varieties (inpari 10 + 100 kg/plot) results in a significant best treatment in increasing the weight of 1000 grains, production per plot, and resistance to brown planthopper attacks.

Discussion

Further analysis reveals the relationship between nitrogen nutrient levels (N) in plants with a percentage of brown planthopper attacks at the age of 3 to 8 weeks after planting (MST) shows a positive correlation with R values ranging from 0.30 to 0.72. That is, the higher the N levels in the plant, the greater the resistance to planthopper attacks. Conversely, potassium nutrients (K) in plants have a negative correlation with the percentage of attacks, with R value between -0.78 to -0.85. This shows that an increase in K levels is actually associated with an increase in the level of brown planthopper attacks, which shows the importance of nutritional balance in the growth of rice plants.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that the selection of appropriate types and doses of fertilizer is very important to increase agricultural output and reduce the vulnerability of rice plants to pest attacks. By using manure with optimal doses and choosing resistant varieties, farmers can increase rice productivity while controlling pest attacks effectively. In-depth understanding of the interaction between nutrition and pest attacks will have a positive impact on sustainable agricultural strategies in the future.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Farmers should use manure with optimal doses to promote plant growth and increase crop yields.
