Introduction

Morphometric analysis is a crucial tool in understanding the genetic diversity of horse populations. By analyzing the physical characteristics of horses, researchers can identify genetic distances and differentiating factors that can affect the quality and performance of horses. In this study, we aimed to measure genetic distances and factors that distinguish horses in four districts in North Sumatra, namely Karo Regency, Humbang Hasundutan, North Tapanuli, and Samosir. Our study was conducted from July 2016, and various analyzes were carried out, including descriptive analysis, discriminant analysis, canonal analysis, main component analysis, genetic distance measurement, and the preparation of phylogenetic trees.

Background

Horse breeding is an essential aspect of animal husbandry, and understanding genetic distances and differentiating factors is crucial in developing effective breeding strategies. Genetic distances refer to the degree of genetic similarity between two or more populations, while differentiating factors refer to environmental, nutritional, or management factors that can affect the characteristics of horses. In this study, we focused on morphometric measurements to identify genetic distances and differentiating factors that can affect the quality and performance of horses.

Methodology

Our study involved a comprehensive analysis of morphometric measurements of horses in four districts in North Sumatra. We collected data on various physical characteristics, including height, weight, body length, and hip height. We then performed various analyzes, including descriptive analysis, discriminant analysis, canonal analysis, main component analysis, genetic distance measurement, and the preparation of phylogenetic trees.

Results

Our analysis showed that one factor that distinguishes horses in this study is the height of the hips. The analysis showed that the closest genetic distance occurred between horses in Karo and North Tapanuli regencies with a value of 0.869. Meanwhile, the farthest genetic distance was recorded between horses in Karo and Samosir regencies with a value of 14,539. This shows a significant difference in genetic characteristics between horses populations in various districts.

Analysis of Distinguishing Factors

This study not only focuses on genetic distances, but also considers other differential factors that can affect the characteristics of horses. These factors include environmental conditions, eating patterns, and different maintenance management in each region. For example, horses that are kept in cooler areas such as Samosir may have different morphological adaptations compared to horses in warmer areas like Karo. Our analysis showed that environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, can affect the physical characteristics of horses. Horses that are kept in cooler areas tend to have a more compact body shape, while horses that are kept in warmer areas tend to have a more slender body shape.

Conclusion

The conclusion of this study shows the importance of understanding genetic distances and other differentiating factors in horse breeding. The results of the analysis provide deeper insight regarding existing genetic diversity and allow developers to plan more effective breeding strategies. By involving a comprehensive analysis method, this study made a significant contribution to the development of horse genetic resources in North Sumatra, and is expected to improve the quality and performance of local horse in the future.

Recommendations

Based on our analysis, we recommend that horse breeders in North Sumatra consider the genetic distances and differentiating factors when developing breeding strategies. Specifically, we recommend that breeders consider the following:

Breeding between horses in Karo and Samosir Regencies, as the genetic differences found can provide better results in terms of endurance and performance.
Considering environmental conditions, eating patterns, and different maintenance management in each region when developing breeding strategies.
Using morphometric measurements to identify genetic distances and differentiating factors that can affect the quality and performance of horses.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, our sample size was limited to four districts in North Sumatra, and our results may not be generalizable to other regions. Secondly, our analysis was based on morphometric measurements, and we did not consider other factors that can affect the characteristics of horses, such as genetic mutations or epigenetic factors. Finally, our study was conducted in a specific region, and our results may not be applicable to other regions with different environmental conditions.

Conducting a larger-scale study to include more districts and regions in North Sumatra.
