Introduction

Orchid cultivation is a complex process that requires careful consideration of various factors to optimize flowering results. Materials and Methods

The study was conducted on Jalan Gajah No. 58, Medan, from February to September 2004. A factorial complete random block design was used, consisting of two factors: Epsom salt concentration and GA3 application interval. The Epsom salt concentrations used were 0 g/liter (E0), 0.25 g/liter (E1), 0.50 g/liter (E2), and 0.75 g/liter (E3). The GA3 application intervals used were once a week (G1), once two weeks (G2), and once three weeks (G3).

Results

The results of this study showed that the effect of Epsom salt concentration was only significant on the remaining number of leaves, but had no significant effect on the growth of stem length, tuber diameter, number of leaves, number of segments, flowering time, flower stem length, number of flower shoots, budget time of shoots, duration of flowering shoots, life span of flowers, and flower diameter. On the other hand, GA3 application intervals had a significant effect on the remaining number of leaves, opening time of shoots, and duration of flowering shoots. However, the effect was also insignificant on the growth of stem length, tuber diameter, number of leaves, number of segments, flowering time, flower stem length, number of flower shoots, flower stems, and flower diameter.

Discussion

The results of this study raise several interesting questions related to the management of fertilization in orchid cultivation. Although Epsom salt is known to have essential magnesium for plants, in the context of this study, the positive effect was not significant in the growth parameters and flowering of Dendrobium sp. It can be interpreted that the concentration of Epsom salt used in this study may not be enough to meet optimal nutritional needs of plants.

Conversely, GA3 application intervals show more significant effects, especially in the aspects of leaf maintenance and flowering. GA3 is a hormone that plays a role in accelerating the process of flowering and development of flower shoots. Significant results at the time of the opening of the shoots and the duration of flowering show that the use of GA3 in the right frequency can affect the quality of flowers and the duration of orchid flowers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights in understanding the influence of nutrients and hormones on orchid flowering. By knowing the factors that influence, it is expected to increase the yield of high-quality Dendrobium SP orchids in the future.
