Introduction

Medan State University Library (Unimed) has been at the forefront of adopting various technologies to increase the accessibility of library materials, especially in electronic form. The library's commitment to providing high-quality services to its users has led to the implementation of efficient and systematic processes for processing electronic library materials. This study aims to analyze the processing of electronic library materials in the Unimed Library, with a focus on the use of Marc (Machine Readable Cataloging) and DCMES (Dublin Core Metadata Element Set formats.

Methodology

The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with data collection conducted through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies in January 2018. The informant in this study consisted of three people involved in the processing, including the Head of the Library Material Processing Section and two processing staff. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the processing of electronic library materials in the Unimed Library.

Electronic Library Material Processing

The processing of electronic documents is carried out through a series of systematic steps. First, the scientific work received will be selected and then edited. This editing includes the conversion of documents from the Microsoft Word format to PDF, file breakdown into several smaller parts, and the addition of watermarks to maintain the authenticity of the document. After the editing stage, the data is entered and stored before the document is uploaded to the Unimed digital library site (digilib.unimed.ac.id).

Document Search and Access

Users who want to access electronic documents must be registered as members of the Unimed library to get full access to documents in a complete text format (fullText), while those who are not registered can only see abstracts. The format used for electronic library material is Portable Document Format (PDF), which is widely known for its ease of appearance and distribution. In terms of document search, the library provides two ways to search: simple search and further search. Users can search based on several access points, such as titles, writers, subjects, and abstracts. This allows users to find information more effectively according to their needs.
