Study of Asphalt Mechanical Properties with Fly Ash: The Effect of Compressive Load and Water Soak Resistance

Introduction

The increasing number of fly ash waste from oil palm combustion has become a significant environmental concern. However, with the advancement of technology, fly ash has started to be utilized in various products, including asphalt mixtures. This study aims to analyze the compressive strength and resistance to water soaking of asphalt mixtures added with palm oil fly ash with variations of 3%, 5%, and 10%, compared to pure asphalt.

Background

Fly ash is the remaining combustion of the boiler that continues to increase in number every year. If not treated properly, fly ash from oil palm can endanger human health due to its fine particle form. The utilization of fly ash in asphalt mixtures has become a promising solution to reduce waste and improve the mechanical performance of asphalt. However, the effect of fly ash on the compressive strength and resistance to water soaking of asphalt mixtures is still unclear.

Methodology

In this study, cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and an average height of 65.46 mm were used. The average weight of the specimens was 1182 g. The parameters under study included compressive strength, resistance to water soaking, and the index of decreased compressive strength after soaking. The results showed that the average compressive strength of pure asphalt specimens (0% fly ash) was 1,108 MPa. Meanwhile, the compressive strength for a mixture of 3% Fly Ash reached 1,186 MPa, 5% Fly Ash increased to 1,359 MPa, and in the 10% Ash mixture to 1,173 MPa.

Results

The results of the study showed that the addition of fly ash can improve the mechanical properties of asphalt, especially on certain proportions. The compressive strength of the asphalt mixture with 3% fly ash increased by 7%, while the mixture with 5% fly ash increased by 22%. However, the mixture with 10% fly ash showed a decrease in compressive strength compared to the 5% mixture. This might indicate that too much use of fly ash can affect asphalt performance.

Discussion

The addition of fly ash can improve the mechanical properties of asphalt due to its ability to fill cavities in the asphalt mixture, thereby increasing density and minimizing the potential for damage due to compressive load. High compressive strength will contribute to the street resistance, so it is better able to withstand high traffic loads. However, the use of fly ash also needs to be considered in terms of proportions.
