Introduction

In recent years, the demand for soybean products has been increasing globally, and Indonesia is one of the largest producers of soybeans in the world. Edamame, a type of soybean, is a popular product that has gained significant attention due to its high nutritional value and versatility in cooking. However, the growth and productivity of edamame plants can be affected by environmental factors such as climate, soil, and temperature. Therefore, it is essential to conduct research on the adaptation of edamame plants to different environments.

Edamame Plant Adaptation Test in North Sumatra

A study conducted by Nia Enzi Lery, under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Emmy Harso Kardhinata, M.Sc., aimed to evaluate the growth of soybean plants Edamame Ryoko Varieties in the North Sumatra region. The research location was situated on Jalan Bunga Lotus Pasar 2 Setia Budi, Medan Selayang District, Medan, and the research was conducted in May 2022.

The study involved planting edamame plants in 4 blocks, with each block consisting of 30 plants arranged in 3 rows with a spacing of 30x40 cm. From each block, eight plants in the middle row were taken as samples. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, number of buds, stem diameter, flowering age, harvest age, number of pods produced, number of seeds per pod, pod weight, the number of filled pods, and the number of empty pods.

Methodology

The data from edamame plants planted in North Sumatra was compared with data from plants planted in Jember, East Java, using a one-way T test. The results showed that parameters such as the number of leaves, the number of pods, the number of seeds, the number of pods filled, the number of empty pods, and the weight of the pods per plant in North Sumatra were greater and statistically different than those planted in Jember, East Java.

Results and Discussion

The results of the study showed that the edamame plants planted in North Sumatra had better growth and productivity compared to those planted in Jember, East Java. The parameters that showed significant differences between the two locations were the number of leaves, the number of pods, the number of seeds, the number of pods filled, the number of empty pods, and the weight of the pods per plant.

This adaptation power test is important because environmental changes can affect plant growth and productivity. Edamame, as a soybean variety that has a high selling value, requires special attention in terms of choosing the right location and cultivation methods. With results that show better growth in North Sumatra, it can be assumed that climate and soil conditions in the area are more supportive for the growth of Ryoko varieties compared to Jember.

Conclusion

In the context of sustainable agriculture, information obtained from this study can be used by farmers to maximize the results of edamame production. The use of varieties in accordance with the local environment is the key to increasing productivity. Knowledge of optimal conditions for plant growth can also help in developing more efficient agricultural strategies.

The success of this study shows the great potential of the planting of edamame in North Sumatra, and can be the first step to develop wider soybean cultivation in the area. By conducting further research, it is hoped that superior varieties will be obtained that can grow well in various environmental conditions, so as to be able to meet market demand that continues to increase.

Through this article, it is hoped that farmers and researchers can understand the importance of plant adaptation research and practical applications from research results to improve the quality and quantity of agricultural products in Indonesia.
