Methodology

This study was conducted in the form of a cross-sectional study between June and July 2015 in three Puskesmas in Batubara Regency, North Sumatra Province. The subjects were divided into two groups: 26 children with M.tuberculosis infection and 24 children without infection. All subjects underwent a complete blood test and iron profile analysis. The data was then analyzed using an independent T test to determine the significance of the difference between the two groups.

The iron serum level in infected groups was also significantly lower than in non-infected groups, with a mean value of 54.7 μg/dL (SD 26.9) compared to 72.58 μg/dL (SD 22.0) in non-infected groups. Additionally, transferrin saturation showed a significant difference between the two groups, with a mean value of 16.3% (SD 8.3) in children with infection compared to 21.2% (SD 6.2) in children without infection.

However, there was no significant difference found in serum ferritin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) between the two groups. Serum ferritin levels in infected groups were 53.6 ng/ml (SD 34.4) and in non-infected groups were 49.4 ng/ml (SD 23.9), with a value of P = 0.615. Likewise, TIBC recorded 343.9 μg/dl (SD 48.7) in children with infection and 342.2 μg/dl (SD 33.5) in children without infection, with a value of P = 0.882.

From this study, it can be concluded that there are significant differences in hemoglobin levels, iron serum, and transferrin saturation between infected and uninfected children. These results indicate that TB infections can affect iron status and increase the risk of anemia in children, which requires more attention in the handling and supervision of children's health, especially in the context of TB epidemiology. By understanding this difference, it is expected that a more effective prevention and treatment strategy can be obtained to improve the health of children who are at risk.
