Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in HIV/AIDS Patients at Adam Malik Hospital in Medan from January 2012 to December 2015

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a significant public health concern worldwide, affecting millions of people every year. Data was collected from 107 patients undergoing treatment at Adam Malik Haji Hospital during the study period. Results

The results of the study showed a significant prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases among HIV/AIDS patients. The most common STDs identified were:

Akuminata condyloma: 36.5%
Syphilis: 19.6%
Trichomoniasis: 2.8%

The study also found that the majority of patients suffering from STDs were in the age range of 31-40 years (37.4%), male (71.0%), had a high school education (72.9%), were married (81.3%), and worked as entrepreneurs (53.3%). Additionally, there was a significant proportion of patients from Javanese ethnicity (38.3%).

The results of this study highlight the vulnerability of HIV/AIDS patients to sexually transmitted diseases. The compromised immune system of HIV/AIDS patients makes them more susceptible to secondary infections, including STDs. The decline in T-CD4 cells, which is a hallmark of HIV infection, increases the risk of developing STDs. It is essential to increase awareness and improve screening for STDs among HIV/AIDS patients to prevent the development of more severe complications.
