Introduction

The Golden Age of human development, which refers to the preschool age, is a crucial period in a child's life. During this stage, the cognitive development of children is significantly influenced by their parenting and the surrounding environment. In today's digital era, the use of gadgets is widespread, even among children. However, changes in parenting patterns have created a challenge for parents in managing a healthy screen time for their children. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parenting patterns and the duration of use of gadgets in children with their cognitive development in Tanjung Morawa District.

Background

The use of gadgets among children has become a common phenomenon in today's digital age. However, excessive screen time has been linked to various negative effects on children's cognitive development, including attention problems, social-emotional difficulties, and decreased physical activity. On the other hand, moderate screen time can have positive effects on children's cognitive development, such as improved problem-solving skills and enhanced creativity. Therefore, it is essential for parents to manage their children's screen time effectively.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative analysis method with a cross-sectional research design. A sample of 30 families with preschool children who met the research inclusion criteria was selected. Data was collected using a questionnaire and the Denver Development Screening Test II instrument was used to measure children's cognitive development. The data collected was then analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test, with an alternative Fisher Exact Test, producing a value of P = 0.028, which indicates a significant relationship between parenting patterns, screen duration, and child cognitive development.

Results

The results of the analysis show that the majority of respondents apply democratic parenting, accompanied by a good screen time setting and positive cognitive development of children. This indicates that parents who apply more open and participatory parenting tend to be more successful in managing the use of children's devices and supporting their cognitive development.
