Introduction

The acceptance of Muslim Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for banking institutions in the City of Pematang Siantar is a crucial aspect of economic growth and development. In this study, we aim to examine the acceptance of Muslim SME entrepreneurs to banking institutions in Pematang Siantar City. This research is exploratory, so it does not aim to test certain hypotheses. The data used comes from primary sources collected through a random sampling technique, with the Snowball Sampling method involving 50 Muslim SME entrepreneurs. Data collection is carried out using a survey that has been arranged in the form of a questionnaire. The analysis method applied is descriptive analysis.

Methodology

The methodology used in this study is based on a survey that has been arranged in the form of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 50 Muslim SME entrepreneurs in Pematang Siantar City. The respondents were selected using the Snowball Sampling method, which is a non-probability sampling technique. The questionnaire consisted of questions related to the demographics of the respondents, their business activities, and their use of banking services.

Demographics of Respondents

The demographics of the respondents are presented in the following table:

As shown in the table, the majority of the respondents were S1 graduates, which is 40% of the total respondents. In addition, around 92% of the respondents have never studied in religious schools. The Javanese is the most dominating business people in Pematang Siantar with a percentage of 68%.

Use of Banking Services

The use of banking services by the respondents is presented in the following table:

As shown in the table, the use of conventional banking services by the respondents reached 52%, while Islamic bank service users were 36%.

Reasons for Choosing Conventional Banks

The reasons for choosing conventional banks by the respondents are presented in the following table:

As shown in the table, the ease of access and proximity of services is the main reason for entrepreneurs to prefer conventional banks, with 50% of conventional bank users stated this.

Reasons for Choosing Islamic Banks

The reasons for choosing Islamic banks by the respondents are presented in the following table:

As shown in the table, entrepreneurs who choose Islamic banks do it to avoid usury practices, with 50% of them stated this reason as the main consideration.

Conclusion

The results of this study show that although there is a high awareness among Muslim SME entrepreneurs to transact in accordance with sharia principles, in fact they still tend to use conventional bank services. This shows the dissatisfaction with Islamic bank services or maybe the lack of understanding of the benefits of Islamic banks among entrepreneurs.

In this context, banking institutions, especially Islamic banks, need to increase understanding and introduction to the products and services they offer. More intensive education and socialization to Muslim SME entrepreneurs can help them to better understand the importance of transactions in accordance with sharia principles. Thus, an increase in revenue to Islamic banks can be achieved, and simultaneously, encouraging more sustainable economic growth and in accordance with religious values adopted by Muslim SME entrepreneurs in Pematang Siantar.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase understanding and introduction to Islamic bank products and services: Banking institutions, especially Islamic banks, need to increase understanding and introduction to the products and services they offer.
More intensive education and socialization: More intensive education and socialization to Muslim SME entrepreneurs can help them to better understand the importance of transactions in accordance with sharia principles.
Strategic approach in building relations: This study illustrates the importance of a more strategic approach in building relations between Muslim SME entrepreneurs and banking institutions, so that both parties can achieve mutually beneficial benefits.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The sample size of this study is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
Non-probability sampling technique: The Snowball Sampling method used in this study is a non-probability sampling technique, which may introduce bias in the results.
Limited scope: This study only focuses on Muslim SME entrepreneurs in Pematang Siantar City, which may limit the scope of the study.

Future Research Directions

Future research directions include:

Large-scale study: A large-scale study can be conducted to increase the generalizability of the results.
Probability sampling technique: A probability sampling technique can be used to reduce bias in the results.
Comparison with other regions: A comparison with other regions can be conducted to identify the differences and similarities in the acceptance of Muslim SME entrepreneurs to banking institutions.

In conclusion, this study examines the acceptance of Muslim SME entrepreneurs to banking institutions in Pematang Siantar City.
