This research aims to investigate how Medan people view the function of urban forests and their impact on the environment.

Background

Medan City Forest is a significant urban forest in Medan City, covering an area of approximately 3,000 hectares. The forest is home to various plant and animal species, providing a habitat for wildlife and improving air quality. The forest also serves as a recreational area for the community, offering opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. However, the forest faces several challenges, including deforestation, pollution, and human-wildlife conflict.

Methodology

On the other hand, the landscape sub-variable received a better response, which is 61.75%, which is categorized as good. In terms of environmental preservation, respondents provide very positive results, with a percentage reaching 98.46%, which is included in the very good category. As for the aesthetic sub-variable, the results are in a pretty good category, with a percentage of 58.97%.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the community has a positive perception of the function of Medan City Forest. The community recognizes the importance of urban forests in preserving the environment and promoting sustainable development. The results also suggest that the community is aware of the benefits of urban forests, including improved air quality, increased biodiversity, and enhanced aesthetic value.

Conclusion

Overall, the average public perception of the function of Medan City Forest was recorded at 66.6%, which could be categorized as good. This shows that the community is quite understanding and cared about the role of urban forests in efforts to preserve the environment and the development of a greener city. With increasing public awareness about the benefits of urban forests, there is hope that the act of maintaining and preserving the environment can be improved.

Recommendations

This research is expected to be a reference for further efforts in making Medan City as an ideal green city, as well as improving the quality of life of the community. The role of government is also very important in the socialization of the functions and benefits of urban forests, so that people better understand the importance of forests in supporting sustainable life. Through awareness and community participation in protecting urban forests, we can hope that a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment will be formed for future generations.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focuses on Medan City Forest and does not consider other urban forests in Medan City. Secondly, the study only collects data from a limited number of respondents, which may not be representative of the entire community.
