Introduction

In today's globalized world, the importance of preserving local languages and cultures cannot be overstated. The III environment of Tembung Village, Medan Tembung District, is a prime example of a community that has been working tirelessly to maintain its regional language and cultural heritage. This study aims to explore the role of interpersonal communication between parents and children in instilling local language knowledge, with a focus on families with children aged 13 to 15 years.

This study employed a descriptive approach with a population of 135 families located in the III environment of Tembung Village. A simple random sample technique was used to select 48 families as the sample size. Researchers collected data through interviews and questionnaires consisting of 27 closed questions and 2 open questions. Data analysis was conducted using a single table method to provide a clearer picture of the pattern of communication between parents and children.

The results of this study showed that interpersonal communication between parents and children had taken place quite effectively in instilling the knowledge of regional languages. However, the intensity of communication was still relatively low. This indicates that even though there has been an effort to introduce regional languages, parents need to be more active in building and maintaining conversations related to regional language and culture.
