The Influence of Poster and Text Reminder on COVID-19 Vaccination in the WhatsApp Group on the Knowledge and Attitudes of Students of the University of North Sumatra

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the world, including Indonesia, affecting all levels of society, including students. The government has implemented various programs to break the chain of the spread of COVID-19, one of which is vaccination. However, the survey results show that some people are hesitant to be vaccinated due to fear of side effects, fear, and distrust. Health promotion efforts regarding COVID-19 vaccination are crucial, especially for students who act as agents of change.

The University of North Sumatra (USU) has a significant role in promoting health awareness among its students. As a leading institution of higher education, USU has a responsibility to provide its students with accurate and reliable information about COVID-19 vaccination. This study aims to determine the effect of health promotion using poster media and text reminder on the knowledge and attitudes of USU students regarding COVID-19 vaccination.

Methodology

This study uses a quasi-experimental research design with a non-equivalent control group design. The study was conducted in USU involving 32 non-health students as a sample. Data collection was done using a questionnaire, and the data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon test for knowledge and the paired t-test for attitudes.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant difference in the average knowledge before and after being given poster media (respectively 9.94 and 14.44) with a p-value of 0.000. Similarly, the attitude of students before and after being given poster media (48.12 and 65.12) with a p-value of 0.000. There is also a difference in the average knowledge before and after intervention is given through text reminder (respectively 9.56 and 13.50) and attitudes before and after (49.56 and 63.25).

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the poster media had a greater influence on student knowledge and attitudes compared to text reminder. This suggests that poster media is a more effective tool in promoting health awareness among USU students. The use of poster media and text reminder can increase the knowledge and attitudes of USU students related to COVID-19 vaccination.

Conclusion

This study concluded that health promotion using poster media and text reminder can increase the knowledge and attitudes of USU students related to COVID-19 vaccination. The use of poster media and text reminder is recommended as a medium of health promotion in the delivery of material about COVID-19 vaccination. The use of this media is expected to increase student awareness and participation in the vaccination program, so as to create Herd Immunity in the campus environment.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Choosing an attractive and easy to understand poster design: The poster design should be visually appealing and easy to understand to grab the attention of students.
Adjusting the contents of the message with the needs and characteristics of students: The message should be tailored to the needs and characteristics of students to ensure that it is relevant and effective.
Performing periodic evaluations of the effectiveness of promotional media: Regular evaluations should be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the promotional media and make necessary adjustments.
Strengthening synergy with various related parties to expand the reach of promotion: Collaboration with various related parties, such as health organizations and community leaders, can help expand the reach of the promotion and increase its effectiveness.

Implications

The findings of this study have implications for the promotion of health awareness among USU students. The use of poster media and text reminder can be an effective tool in promoting health awareness and increasing student participation in the vaccination program. This can contribute to the creation of a safe and healthy campus environment.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a single institution. Future studies should aim to replicate this study with a larger sample size and in multiple institutions to increase the generalizability of the findings.
