The Use of Nanoparticles Chitosan from Squid Cartilage (Loligo pealli) as Adsorbents to Iron Metal Ions (Fe3+), Zinc (Zn2+), and Cadmium (CD2+)

Introduction

The increasing levels of heavy metal pollution in water bodies pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. In this study, we discuss the use of nanoparticles chitosan originating from squid cartilage (Loligo pealli) as an adsorbent to reduce the concentration of heavy metal ions.

The production of nanoparticles chitosan involves dissolving chitosan in a 1% acetic acid solution, followed by the addition of a 1% sodium tripolifosphate solution to an emulsion. The emulsion is then placed in an ultrasonic bath for one hour to produce chitosan nanoparticles. The resulting nanoparticles have a high specific surface area and binding power, making them effective adsorbents for heavy metal ions.

Adsorption Process

The adsorption process involves mixing 50 ml of the nanoparticles produced with 100 ml of standard solutions of metal ions Fe3+, Zn2+, and CD2+ with a concentration of 5 mg/l. The adsorption process is carried out with a variation of contact time for 15, 30, and 45 minutes. The efficiency of reducing metal content is determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS).
