Introduction

The Medan Area University Library (UMA) is one of the leading libraries in the region, providing a vast collection of resources to support the academic and research needs of its users. However, with the ever-increasing volume of library materials, collection weeding has become a crucial aspect of maintaining a relevant and up-to-date collection. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of weeding collections in the UMA library by applying the Continuous Review, Evaluation, and Weeding (Crew) methods.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, where data collection was carried out through observation and direct interviews with the head of the library and librarians in the UMA Library. The data preparation process involved grouping the results of the interview based on the assumptions of the problems encountered and the answer patterns of the informant.

Results

The results of this study showed that the UMA library had a structured weeding policy and its implementation went well. The library routinely exercises control and collection of collections, so that damaged collections can be immediately repaired or replaced with new ones. Collection weeding is also carried out in conjunction with stock taking and efforts to preserve library materials, with the aim of saving space and ensuring the library collection remains relevant and the latest.

However, the UMA library does not apply the overall crew method, because the manager feels that the theory is too complicated and the risk of issuing too many collections from the library.
