Making Biodiesel from Rice Bran Oil: A Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Approach

Introduction

The world is shifting towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to energy production, and biodiesel is one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel produced from the process of transesterification of triglycerides, which can come from oil or fat. This process involves the use of catalysts and alcohol to convert triglycerides into biodiesel. In this study, we examine the manufacture of biodiesel from rice bran oil using KOH catalysts combined with natural zeolite as a heterogeneous catalyst of solid.

Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning fuel compared to traditional fossil fuels, producing fewer emissions and greenhouse gases. The Biodiesel Making Process

In this study, the natural KOH/Zeolite catalyst was prepared through the modification process with impregnation techniques using a reflux condenser. Various process variables were analyzed to get maximum biodiesel results, including KOH concentration (75/100 ml-175/100 ml), catalyst number (2-4%), reaction time (1.5-3.5 hours), and ratio Alcohol mole against oil (8: 1-12: 1). The transesterification process is carried out at 60 ºC with a stirring speed of 500 rpm.

The results showed that the highest biodiesel yield obtained was 98.71%. This is achieved by the use of 2% catalyst, reaction time for 2 hours, and alcohol mole ratio to oil 10: 1. Achievement of this high yield shows that the modification of natural zeolite with KOH is effective in increasing the efficiency of the transesterification process.

Catalyst Characterization

Natural KOH/Zeolite catalysts used in this study have been analyzed using several characterization techniques, such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Through FTIR techniques, it can be seen that there are changes in the functional structure of zeolite after being modified with KOH. Meanwhile, AAS is used to determine the levels of the elements contained in the catalyst, provide further information about the effectiveness and stability of the catalyst used.

Analysis and Benefits

The manufacture of biodiesel from rice bran oil using natural KOH/zeolite not only provides a solution to dependence on fossil fuels, but also supports the management of agricultural waste. Rice bran oil, which is often discarded or not utilized optimally, can be a source of valuable raw materials in making biodiesel. In addition, the use of solid catalysts such as natural zeolites offers benefits compared to liquid catalysts, including ease in the process of separation and re -processing, so as to reduce biodiesel production costs.

Conclusion

Overall, this study made a significant contribution to the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly biodiesel making technology. With high biodiesel yields, the use of local resources, and efficient catalyst technology, making biodiesel from rice bran oil can be a promising alternative in meeting increasing energy needs.

Abstract
