Introduction

Corporate governance (CG) has become a crucial aspect of a company's success in today's business world. Good corporate governance (GCG) is essential for creating a transparent and accountable company, which in turn can lead to improved financial performance. However, the relationship between GCG and company performance is complex, and the impact of GCG on financial performance is still a topic of debate among researchers and practitioners.

This study aims to analyze the effect of the application of good corporate governance (GCG) on the financial performance of companies registered at the Indonesian Institute for Corporate Governance (IICG) during the 2007 to 2009 period. The study uses a causality variable approach, with samples taken from companies listed in IICG through the Purposive Sampling method. The data used is pooling, which includes cross-sectoral series and data series data, taken from the company's annual financial statements during the 2007 to 2009 period.

Methodology

The study uses a quantitative approach, with a focus on statistical analysis. The data used includes financial statements from companies listed in IICG, which are obtained from the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) and the Corporate Governance Perception Index (CGPI) ranking. The GCG indicators used are measured based on the scores obtained, while the financial performance indicators used are Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Investment (ROI), and Earning Per Share (EPS).

The study uses simple regression analysis to test the hypothesis that the application of GCG has a significant influence on the company's financial performance. The results of the study are presented in the following section.

Results

The results of the study show that the application of GCG has no significant influence on the company's financial performance. The ROE, ROI, and EPS indicators cannot be explained by the application of GCG. This finding suggests that good corporate governance practices are not always directly proportional to the improvement of company performance.

Discussion

The results of this study open a new discourse on the relationship between corporate governance and company performance. Although GCG is considered important in creating transparency and accountability in company management, the fact that GCG has no significant effect on the company's financial performance raises questions about the effectiveness of the implementation of GCG itself.

First, external variables such as market conditions, government regulations, and other macroeconomic factors can be a major cause of financial performance that is not directly related to the application of GCG. Companies may face significant challenges that cannot be overcome just by improving the aspect of governance.

Second, the quality of GCG implementation itself needs to be questioned. Not all companies apply the principle of GCG in the same way, and some may only do it as a formal compliance without a real commitment to increase the company's value. If the application of GCG is superficial, the impact on financial performance can also be minimal.

Third, other aspects of company management, such as marketing strategies, product innovation, and operational efficiency, may be more influential on financial performance. In other words, companies need to pay attention to various other aspects besides GCG to achieve optimal performance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although a good corporate governance is an important element in creating a transparent and accountable company, the results of this study indicate that its influence on financial performance cannot be relied on directly. Therefore, companies need to integrate GCG with other managerial strategies to achieve sustainable success. Further research is needed to explore complex relationships between corporate governance and company performance in Indonesia.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Companies should not rely solely on GCG to improve their financial performance. Instead, they should integrate GCG with other managerial strategies to achieve sustainable success.
The quality of GCG implementation needs to be improved. Companies should ensure that their GCG practices are not superficial, but rather a real commitment to increase the company's value.
Further research is needed to explore complex relationships between corporate governance and company performance in Indonesia.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. First, the study uses a causality variable approach, which may not capture the complexity of the relationship between GCG and company performance. Second, the study uses a quantitative approach, which may not capture the qualitative aspects of GCG implementation. Third, the study uses a sample of companies listed in IICG, which may not be representative of all companies in Indonesia.

This study opens up several avenues for future research. First, further research is needed to explore the complex relationships between corporate governance and company performance in Indonesia.
