Introduction

Refill water, also known as Amiu, has become a popular alternative to bottled drinking water due to its convenience and affordability. However, the quality and safety of refill water are often questionable, with many depots failing to meet sanitation and hygiene standards. The presence of bacteria such as Escherichia coli in drinking water can cause serious health problems, including diarrhea and other waterborne diseases. This study aims to analyze the sanitation hygiene and quality of microbiology of refill drinking water at the Amiu Depot in Pematangsiantar City, Indonesia.

Background

Refill water is a new trend in the drinking water market, offering a cheaper alternative to bottled water. However, the quality and safety of refill water are often compromised due to inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices. Many studies have found that refill water depots in various cities fail to meet the required standards, posing a risk to public health. The presence of bacteria such as Escherichia coli in drinking water can cause serious health problems, including diarrhea and other waterborne diseases.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive survey method with random sampling techniques to collect data from 15 Amiu depots in Pematangsiantar City. The study aimed to analyze the sanitation hygiene and quality of microbiology of refill drinking water based on raw water sources and refill drinking water. The results of the study were compared to the physical feasibility requirements determined by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 43 of 2014.

Results

The results of the study showed that none of the drinking water samples met the physical feasibility requirements determined by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 43 of 2014. The results of the laboratory tests showed that all samples of drinking water examined did not exceed the quality standards of Escherichia coli and microbiology, as well as meeting the requirements of Permenkes 492 of 2010.

Discussion

The findings of this study indicate that the Amiu Depot in Pematangsiantar City failed to meet the physical feasibility requirements, which is a serious indication of the lack of attention to hygiene and sanitation in the drinking water treatment process. The physical feasibility standards include several important aspects such as:

Raw water sources: The quality of the raw water sources used must be guaranteed cleanliness.
Processing Process: The water treatment process must be adequate to remove dirt, bacteria, and other harmful substances.
Environmental state depot: The state of the depot must be clean and free from the source of contamination.

Although the results of laboratory tests show that refill water meets the quality standards of Escherichia coli and microbiology, this does not necessarily guarantee the safety of overall drinking water.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increased supervision and counseling: The Pematangsiantar City Health Office should increase supervision and counseling to the Amiu Depot Manager regarding good hygiene and sanitation.
Application of certification system: The Amiu Depot should apply the certification system to ensure the quality of drinking water produced.
Education to the public: The public should be educated about the importance of choosing the Amiu depot that is guaranteed cleanliness.
Increasing public awareness: Public awareness of the dangers of drinking water consumption that does not meet health standards should be increased.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate that although refill drinking water in Pematangsiantar City meets microbiological standards, the hygiene and sanitation depot still need to be improved. Increasing awareness and joint efforts from various parties is needed to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water consumed by the community.

Limitation

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The study only collected data from 15 Amiu depots, which may not be representative of the entire city.
Limited scope: The study only analyzed the sanitation hygiene and quality of microbiology of refill drinking water, and did not consider other factors that may affect the quality of drinking water.
