Introduction

The Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) is one of the largest stock exchanges in Southeast Asia, with a wide range of companies listed across various sectors, including food and beverage. The food and beverage industry is a significant contributor to the Indonesian economy, with many companies listed on the IDX. In this study, we aim to analyze the factors that influence profit smoothing in food and beverage companies listed on the IDX for the 2005-2008 period.

This can be done in various ways, such as delaying the recognition of income or accelerating the recognition of costs. Research Methodology

This study involved 11 food and beverage companies listed on the IDX and used the Purposive Sampling method. The data used was obtained from the 2009 Indonesian Capital Market Directory (ICMD). Before the multivariat analysis, the data was analyzed first using the univariate test. The statistical method used is logistical regression.

Factors Affecting Profit Smoothing

The factors analyzed in this study include company size, Net Profit Margin (NPM), Operating Profit Margin (OPM), and Asset Returns (ROA). These factors are commonly used in financial analysis to evaluate a company's performance and profitability.

Results

The results of this study showed that only ROA had significant differences between companies that made profit and profit. Other variables, namely company size, NPM, and OPM, do not show significant differences. The results also showed that all independent variables studied did not have a significant influence on income leveling. The Cox & Snell R Square value obtained by 0.613 shows that 61.3% of variations in the income leveling can be explained by the independent variables studied, while the remaining (38.7%) is influenced by other factors that are not examined in this study.

Discussion

Although this research shows that the variables studied do not have a significant influence on profit smoothing, these results need to be further examined by considering the following factors:

Measurement Method: The use of different methods of measurement of profit and income can produce different results.
Research period: A longer research period can provide more accurate and comprehensive results.
Other factors: This research only focuses on several factors. Other factors that are not examined, such as governance, capital structure, and market conditions, can also affect profit smoothing.
