Introduction

The physical workload of workers in various industries has become a significant concern in recent years. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect approximately 2.3 million workers worldwide, resulting in significant economic losses and decreased productivity. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration reports that MSDs are the leading cause of work-related injuries, accounting for 44.6% of all work-related injuries in 2020.

In the production of ribbed smoked sheet (RSS) at PTPN III Sarang Giting, workers are exposed to various physical demands, including manual lifting, bending, and twisting. The company's workstations consist of processing stations, smoking room stations, and sorting stations, each with unique physical demands and ergonomic challenges. This study aims to analyze the physical workload of workers in the sorting area using the Cardiovascular Load (CVL) method and propose ergonomic work facilities to reduce the risk of MSDs.

Methodology

This study involved 30 workers in the production area, including those in the printing section. The analysis method used to measure physical workload was the Cardiovascular Load (CVL) method, which assesses the physical workload based on the energy expenditure of workers. The CVL method is a widely used and effective method for evaluating physical workload in various industries.

The study collected data on the physical workload of workers in the sorting area, including the energy expenditure, heart rate, and blood pressure. The data were analyzed using the CVL method to determine the level of physical workload and the risk of MSDs.

Results

The results of this study showed that the largest physical workload in the sorting area was experienced by workers 7, 11, and 12, with a percentage of Cardiovascular Load (CVL) of 60.550%, 60.090%, and 60.82%, respectively. This is caused by the manual work done by these workers, including cutting rubber sheets, folding rubber on the mold table, and removing rubber to the weighing table.

The work element carried out in the printing section produces complaints with the highest percentage in the upper neck, lower neck, left upper arm, back, right upper arm, waist, left elbow, right elbow, left arm, right forearm, right forearm, left wrist, right wrist, left hand, right hand, left foot, and right foot, with a percentage of 100%. This is caused by the non-ergonomic work posture adopted by these workers.

The working posture assessment in removal of rubber gets a high level of risk with a score of 10, indicating that immediate action is needed to reduce the risk of MSDs.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that high physical workload in the sorting area has the potential to pose health risks for workers. The high level of complaint in various parts of the body indicates the discrepancy between work posture and the ability of the worker's body.

The use of the Cardiovascular Load (CVL) method to assess the physical workload is an effective method in identifying the level of fatigue of workers and the risks caused. This method provides a quantitative measure of physical workload, allowing for the identification of high-risk tasks and the development of targeted interventions to reduce the risk of MSDs.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

It is necessary to conduct training to workers related to the technique of removing the correct load and the importance of ergonomic work postures.
Companies need to carry out regular monitoring of the physical workload of workers and evaluate the design of work facilities to ensure their effectiveness in minimizing the health risk of workers.

Conclusion

This study shows that the physical workload in the sorting area of the Ribbed Smoked Sheet PTPN III Sarang Giting is very high and has the potential to pose health risks for workers. The design of the rubber transport trolley using anthropometry is the right solution to increase work ergonomics and reduce the physical workload of workers in the sorting area.

Future Directions

Future studies should focus on the development of ergonomic work facilities, including the design of rubber transport trolleys, to reduce the physical workload of workers in the sorting area. Additionally, studies should investigate the effectiveness of training programs in reducing the risk of MSDs and improving work ergonomics.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the use of a single method to assess physical workload. Future studies should aim to recruit a larger sample size and use multiple methods to assess physical workload, including self-reported measures and objective measures such as heart rate and blood pressure.
