Introduction

The level of community consumption in North Sumatra is an important indicator that reflects the welfare and standard of living of the population. Therefore, this research tests three alternative approaches to predict consumption and poverty expenses both at the household and aggregate levels, as a simpler way to monitor welfare. The approach used is i) Consumption Corret Model, ii) Poverty Probability Model, and iii) Wealth Index Using Main Component Analysis (PCA).

Analysis of Income and Interest Rates

In the economic context, income and interest rates have a significant influence on the consumption rate. Higher income will usually increase people's purchasing power. When people have stable and increase income, they tend to spend more money for basic needs and other consumer goods. This certainly has a positive impact on regional economic growth. For instance, a study by the World Bank found that a 10% increase in income can lead to a 5-10% increase in consumption expenditure.

On the other hand, interest rates also play an important role in determining the level of consumption. Low interest rates tend to encourage people to borrow money and buy larger goods such as houses and cars. Meanwhile, wise consumption patterns will help people to manage their expenses better, thereby reducing the risk of falling into poverty.
