Introduction

The 2024 Presidential Election in Indonesia is a pivotal moment for the nation, marking a significant shift in the country's political landscape. However, amidst the excitement and anticipation, a concerning phenomenon has emerged: hate speech. This study aims to investigate the function and meaning of hate speech in the 2024 Presidential Election discourse on social media, with a focus on the Instagram platform. By analyzing 152 comments containing hate speech, this research seeks to provide insights into the types of speech acts and hate speech utterances that are prevalent in this context.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative approach, analyzing comments containing hate speech on the Instagram account discussing the 2024 Presidential Election from January 1 to November 10, 2023. The data collection process involved identifying and categorizing comments that exhibited hate speech, which were then analyzed using the framework of speech acts proposed by Yule (1996). The results were then compared to the six types of hate speech identified by the study.

Results

The analysis revealed that of the 152 comments containing hate speech, three types of speech acts were dominant: Representative (117), Directive (23), and Expressive (12). Representative speech acts, which involve the delivery of information or statements reflecting the conviction of the commentator, were the most prevalent. This finding suggests that the majority of comments containing hate speech focus on conveying information or expressing opinions, rather than issuing directives or making declarations.

Furthermore, the study identified six types of hate speech utterances: humiliation (57), defamation (30), blasphemy (35), provocation (22), incitement (4), and spread hoax news (4). Humiliation was the most common type of hate speech utterance, while unpleasant actions were not identified in this context.
