Analysis of Factors Related to Covid-19 Vaccination Actions in the Elderly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village in 2022

Introduction

The rapid spread of Covid-19 at the end of 2019 and early 2020 has led to a significant surge in cases worldwide. In response to this pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued COVID-19 vaccination guidelines in November 2020, emphasizing the importance of vaccinating the elderly population. Unfortunately, the level of Covid-19 vaccination among the elderly in Indonesia, particularly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village, remains low. This article aims to analyze the factors related to Covid-19 vaccination actions in the elderly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village in 2022.

Background

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the elderly population worldwide. The elderly are more susceptible to severe illness and death from Covid-19 due to their age and underlying health conditions. Vaccination is a crucial measure to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the elderly population. However, the level of Covid-19 vaccination among the elderly in Indonesia, particularly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village, remains low. This is a major obstacle in achieving vaccination targets in the country.

Methodology

This study uses an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach, involving the elderly population in Pangkalan Masyhur Village. A total of 2,956 existing elderly were sampled using a proportional sampling technique. The questionnaire was used as a research instrument to collect data on the variables related to vaccination decisions.

Results

The results of the study show that 34 respondents (52.3%) have been vaccinated against Covid-19, while 31 respondents (47.7%) have not. Statistical analysis found several variables related to vaccination decisions. Educational variables (p = 0.012), knowledge (p = 0.001), attitudes (p = 0.001), and family support (p = 0.026) are proven to have a significant relationship with vaccination. On the other hand, variables such as age (p = 0.138), sex (p = 0.292), work (p = 0.188), facilities and infrastructure (p = 0.309), and government regulations (p = 0.080) do not show significant relationships.

Analysis of Determining Factors

1. Education

Education plays an important role in increasing the understanding of the elderly about the benefits of vaccination. The elderly who have a higher level of education tend to have better knowledge about vaccines and positive impacts on health. This shows the need for a more intensive educational program for the elderly group with a low level of education.

2. Knowledge

Good knowledge about the Covid-19 vaccine can be the main driver for the elderly to be willing to be vaccinated. Accurate information about the effectiveness, safety, and benefits of vaccines needs to be conveyed clearly to the public, so that they are not easily influenced by misleading information.

3. Attitudes

A positive attitude towards vaccination also affects the decision to be vaccinated. In this context, the formation of a positive attitude can be done through a campaign that arouses enthusiasm and gives positive examples of those who have been vaccinated.

4. Family Support

Support from the family is a determining factor for the elderly in making decisions to be vaccinated. The family plays an important role in motivating and convincing the elderly about the importance of vaccination, especially for those who are still doubtful.

Recommendation

Based on the results of the analysis, it is essential to optimize the COVID-19 vaccination infrastructure and increase public awareness. The educational program targeting the elderly, increasing the role of the family in supporting vaccination, and ensuring easy access to vaccination facilities are steps that must be prioritized. Thus, it is expected that the level of vaccination among the elderly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village can increase, so that the great goal in overcoming COVID-19 can be achieved.

Conclusion

Joint efforts from the government, the community, and family are needed to create an environment that supports and facilitates the elderly in obtaining COVID-19 vaccination. By understanding the factors related to Covid-19 vaccination actions in the elderly in Pangkalan Masyhur Village, we can develop effective strategies to increase vaccination rates and protect the elderly population from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single village, which may not be representative of the entire region. Secondly, the study only focused on the elderly population, which may not be representative of the entire population.
