The Influence of Child Parenting on the Occurrence of Malnutrition in Toddlers in the Working Area of the Montasik Health Center in Montasik District, Aceh Besar Regency in 2006

Introduction

Malnutrition in toddlers is a serious problem faced by Indonesia, including in the Aceh Besar Regency. According to data in 2006, Aceh Besar was ranked third in NAD Province for the Malnutrition case of toddlers. The working area of the Montasik Puskesmas has the highest percentage of malnutrition toddlers in the district, reaching 28.53%. This study aims to reveal the effect of child parenting on the occurrence of malnutrition in toddlers.

Background

Malnutrition in toddlers is a complex issue that involves various factors, including parenting practices. Parenting practices, such as the type of food given and the frequency of eating, play a crucial role in determining the nutritional status of toddlers. However, the relationship between parenting practices and malnutrition in toddlers is not well understood. This study aims to investigate the effect of child parenting on the occurrence of malnutrition in toddlers in the working area of the Montasik Puskesmas.

Methodology

This study involved 150 toddlers (aged 12-59 months) and their parents. The study used a cross-sectional design, where data were collected at a single point in time. The data collection tools included a questionnaire to gather information about parenting practices, such as the type of food given and the frequency of eating, and anthropometric measurements to assess the nutritional status of toddlers.

Results

The results of the study showed that the child's parenting had a significant influence on malnutrition events. The factors of parenting that influence are:

Building a mentoring and support program for toddlers who experience malnutrition, including finding donors to help meet their nutritional needs.

Head of Montasik Puskesmas:

Reactivating nutrition officers and cadres to make home visits to toddlers who experience malnutrition.
Conduct direct counseling to toddlers' parents about the type of food and the frequency of eating that is appropriate to age.

Conclusion

This study underlined the importance of proper parenting, especially related to the type of food provided and the frequency of eating, in preventing malnutrition in toddlers. Sustainable education and assistance for toddlers' parents is the key to overcoming malnutrition problems and ensuring optimal toddler growth and development.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The study used a cross-sectional design, which may not capture the dynamic nature of parenting practices and malnutrition in toddlers. The study also relied on self-reported data from parents, which may be subject to bias. Future studies should use a longitudinal design and collect data from multiple sources to overcome these limitations.
