Introduction

Research on the primary productivity of aquatic ecosystems, especially phytoplankton, is an essential aspect in understanding the health and potential utilization of natural resources in a sustainable manner. The Snake River, located in Deli Serdang Regency, is an interesting object of research to uncover the potential of natural resources in the region. This study was conducted during June to August 2014 with a focus on primary phytoplankton productivity and its relationship with physical and chemical factors in the river.

Phytoplankton, as the primary producers of aquatic ecosystems, play a crucial role in the food chain and water quality. Understanding their productivity is essential in managing and conserving aquatic ecosystems. The Snake River, with its unique characteristics and location, provides an ideal setting for studying phytoplankton productivity. This study aims to investigate the primary phytoplankton productivity in the Snake River and its relationship with physical and chemical factors.

Methodology

This study uses the purposive sampling method by taking samples from three points in the Snake River. Primary phytoplankton productivity is measured by the oxygen method, which is a widely used technique for measuring phytoplankton productivity. The oxygen method involves measuring the amount of oxygen produced by phytoplankton during photosynthesis.

The sampling points were selected based on their location and characteristics. The first sampling point was located near the mouth of the river, while the second and third points were located upstream. The samples were collected during the peak of the dry season, which is from June to August.

Results

The results of this study showed a range of phytoplankton primary productivity in the Snake River, with values ranging from 225,216 to 394,128 mgc/m3/day. The highest value was found at the second sampling point, while the lowest value was at the first point.
