A Picture of the Discrepancy of the Size of the Tooth Size of Various Malocclusion Groups in the Chinese Tribe in the Lubuk Pakam Methodist High School
Introduction
The study of dental size discrepancy is a crucial aspect of orthodontic care, as it can significantly impact the success of treatment. In this study, we conducted a discrepancy analysis of dental size in various malocclusion groups among Chinese ethnic students in the Lubuk Pakam Methodist High School. The purpose of this study is to explore the discrepancy of the size of the teeth in various existing malocclusion groups and to determine the applicability of Bolton analysis in these groups.
Background
Malocclusion is a common dental problem that can affect the harmony of teeth and jaw. It is a complex issue that can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. The Bolton analysis is a widely used method for diagnosing and planning orthodontic care. It involves measuring the width of the mesio-toothy dental using digital calipers to get accurate data. The anterior ratio and overall Bolton analysis are two key factors in determining the success of an orthodontic treatment.
Methodology
This research is descriptive and uses an analytical approach with cross-sectional research design. The sample used amounted to 60 dental study models, consisting of 23 Angle Class I Models, 16 Class II Angle Models, and 21 Class III Angle Models. Measurement of the width of the mesio-toothy dental is done using digital calipers to get accurate data. The results showed that the anterior ratio and overall Bolton analysis vary between the Chinese tribe malocclusion group.
Results
The results of this study showed that the anterior ratio and overall Bolton analysis vary between the Chinese tribe malocclusion group. For the anterior ratio, the class I Angle malocclusion group shows a value of 77.93% with a standard deviation of ± 3.26, class II angle with a value of 77.29% ± 3.6, and class III angle with a value of 79.01% ± 2, 86. As for the overall ratio, the class I Angle shows 91.56% ± 2.68, Class II Angle 89.58% ± 2.55, and Class III Angle 91.84% ± 2.06.
Discussion
Through t-test, found a significant difference in the anterior ratio of the class III Angle malocclusion group (P <0.05) and in the overall ratio of the class II Angle malocclusion group (P <0.05). This shows that Bolton analysis cannot be universally applied to all malocclusion groups. In this case, Bolton analysis can be applied well to the class I group for the anterior and overall ratio, but not for the overall ratio in the class II Angle group and the anterior ratio in the Angle class III group.
Conclusion
This study has important implications in orthodontic practice, because it can help dentists and orthodontis in planning more appropriate and effective care based on the characteristics of the discrepancy of tooth size. By understanding the differences that exist between malocclusion groups, treatment can be adjusted to achieve optimal results, both in terms of function and aesthetic. It is hoped that this research can be a reference for further research and contribute to the development of orthodontic science in Indonesia, especially in the context of dental care in the Chinese tribe.
Limitations
This study has some limitations. The sample size is relatively small, and the study only focused on Chinese ethnic students in the Lubuk Pakam Methodist High School. Future studies should aim to include a larger sample size and to investigate the discrepancy of tooth size in other ethnic groups.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, we recommend that dentists and orthodontis should consider the characteristics of the discrepancy of tooth size when planning orthodontic care. Bolton analysis can be a useful tool in diagnosing and planning orthodontic care, but it should be used with caution and in conjunction with other diagnostic tools. Future studies should aim to investigate the discrepancy of tooth size in other ethnic groups and to develop more effective diagnostic tools for orthodontic care.
